Targhee Sheep: A Breed That's Really Got You Covered

Targhee Sheep: A Breed That's Really Got You Covered

The Targhee breed was “stitched” together in the 1920s with the finest wool-producing bloodlines—Rambouillet, Lincoln, and Corriedale. The result? A breed that is cozy and versatile, with fleece that’s as soft as a cloud.

our journey leads us to one of the most versatile and fascinating breeds in the sheep world: Targhee sheep. Modern in its development yet rich in history, Targhee sheep epitomize the perfect balance between heritage and innovation.

Let’s start with a bit of background.

A New Breed for Modern Needs

The story of Targhee sheep began in the early 1900s, when the western sheep industry sought to bridge the gap between fine wool production and the growing demand for meat. Crossing fine wool breeds like Rambouillet with hardy longwool breeds like Lincoln, early breeders envisioned a sheep that could meet the economic demands of a rapidly changing industry.

The U.S. Sheep Experiment Station in Dubois, Idaho, took up this challenge in 1926, selectively breeding sheep for finer wool and better musculature. By 1938, the effort bore fruit: a hardy, dual-purpose breed that produced high-quality wool and market-ready meat. The new breed was named Targhee, after the National Forest where these sheep grazed during summer.

What Makes Targhee Wool Special?

Targhee sheep are dual-purpose superstars, but their wool steals the spotlight for us knitters. Known for its soft, springy texture and medium-fine quality, Targhee wool offers a luxurious knitting experience. When spun into yarn, it glides through your fingers like velvet, blooms beautifully after washing and blocking, and delivers excellent stitch definition.

Whether you’re crafting cozy sweaters, durable socks, or heirloom blankets, Targhee yarn has the versatility to handle it all. Plus, it’s a joy to knit with—the springiness of the fiber keeps your hands comfortable, even during marathon knitting sessions.

A Blend of Heritage and Modernity

Targhee sheep represent a perfect balance of tradition and progress. While their development relied on scientific breeding methods, their wool retains the charm and quality of heritage breeds. It’s a nod to the past with a clear eye toward the future—a quality that resonates deeply with knitters and fiber enthusiasts alike.
